SOME INTERESTING LOCAL HISTORY

Despite being part of the global metropolis that is London, Plumstead and the Royal Borough it is part of, Greenwich, has close ties to nature and retains a number of green spaces and local nature reserves. In fact, Plumstead common was first mentioned in the Domesday Book and the name refers to the place where plums grow. As the Industrial Revolution grew throughout the 19th century there was a danger that the common would be developed, but the residents protested and after riots the Plumstead Common Act was passed in 1878 ensuring that 100 acres would remain a public space forever. Residents and visitors alike make good use of the common to this day. These days, the local community reflects the diversity of the larger city. Living side by side this diverse, multicultural society is thriving and has become a close knit community.  As a result there are a number of fantastic, yet little known local restaurants, activities and attractions to be found in the area, despite being in the shadow of some of London’s better known landmarks. That is why we asked our local florists for their recommendations on things to do, places to see and where to eat and drink in the community.
