WHAT ABOUT HALIFAX?
Halifax was a mill town during the industrial revolution, and was an economic hub of West Yorkshire, primarily because of its woollen manufacturing industry. Piece Hall was built in the late 18th century for handloom weavers to sell the ‘pieces’ they had produced. Its grandiose square is now a Grade I listed building, and a major cultural and arts venue, but more on that later…Halifax is also closely associated with Mackintosh’s chocolate and toffee products. Halifax Minster, which is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and dates back to the 12th century, has an interesting story, but perhaps the most interesting is that the first organist of the minster, in 1776, was William Herschel who discovered Uranus. There is also a grim side to the history of Halifax, as it was notorious for its gibbet, a forerunner of the guillotine, although thankfully it was last used in 1650. Whilst there are numerous excellent guides about Halifax, as proud members of the community our local florists thought it would be helpful to provide a short list of their top local attractions and places to eat in Halifax.
