A LITTLE LOCAL INSIGHT INTO THE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF COVENTRY

In days gone by the ‘Send you to Coventry’ was used to refer to ostracising someone, but these days, after the city was named UK City of Culture 2021 who wouldn’t want to be sent here!? First founded in the middle-ages Coventry was one of the principle centres of watch and clock manufacturing in the Britain during the industrial revolution, and was later a major centre for bicycle manufacture. The bike company eventually became Rover and ushered a period where the city had a major influence in the British motor industry.  As a result Coventry suffered serious damage during WW2 and substantial redevelopment was needed. That redevelopment has created a thriving and vibrant modern city with a growing independent arts and cultural scene, some fabulous independent boutiques and a burgeoning food and beverage sector. There are many great city guides, things to do and attraction lists about the city, so our local florists have decided to add to the growing list by giving their personal highlights of what to do and see when you are in Coventry.

A LOCAL GUIDE OF THINGS TO DO IN COVENTRY

COVENTRY CATHEDRAL

When the ‘old’ cathedral was destroyed during the Coventry blitz the ‘new’ Cathedral was built in the 1960s on the same site and incorporated the ruins of the previous Cathedral of St. Michael. This is a great reminder of the historic past and modern future of the city.

FARGO VILLAGE

This redeveloped industrial site in the city centre is something of a creative hub with a number of events throughout the year and is also home to a collective of independent businesses not to mention the only indoor food market in Coventry.

COOMBE ABBEY PARK

Designed and landscaped by Capability Brown this 500 acre park is an excellent way to relax away from the buzz of the city and reconnect with nature.

WHERE TO EAT IN COVENTRY
