WHAT IS THE CITY OF LONDON?

Since its founding by the Romans around AD43, London has grown almost exponentially, and the City represents the old boundary of that Roman settlement. It remains the historic centre of London, with notable landmarks such as St Paul’s Cathedral, the Old Bailey, Smithfield Market and the Guildhall, which is actually the administrative centre of the City. The Tower of London is not officially part of the City, but is in fact part of its old defensive perimeter and both London Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge come under the jurisdiction of the City. The Square Mile was the world’s primary business centre during the 19th century, and remains a prominent business and financial centre to this day, with the Bank of England headquartered there. In the 1970s work began on a series of tall office buildings, and the NatWest Tower, standing 600 feet tall and having 47 floors, was the UKs first skyscraper. Despite all of the money that has flooded the area, it still retains much of its old charm and it has a distinctly local feel. Our local florists have provided a list of attraction and places to eat that perhaps many visitors to the City are unaware of.
